Fire. Plane crashes. Subway violence. Politics. It seems like there’s a lot to be scared of these days. But how is this different from the past? And what’s it doing to us — individually and collectively? Writing for The Ringer, Lex Pryor explores the magnetic pull of fear in American culture:

🔴 📖 **Antiquity - Including the “East” As “Western Identity”**

_“In this book, the reader will access debates on intercultural experiences from the perspective of Phoenician colonists in Spain; the formation of a particular Greek identity built by Greek colonists in Sicily; the dramatic social and cultural transformations in the southern Levant following the regional transition to the Bronze Age; the integration of pre-Islamic Somalia in a trade network connected to the Mediterranean, from the Bronze to Iron ages; the multicultural influences inspiring the Book of Genesis; the cultural identity of early Christians as the New Testament is developed under the influence of Near Eastern traditions; and the complex multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dialogue behind the process of formation of Koine Greek during Byzantine times.”

doi.orgAntiquity - Including the “East” As “Western Identity” | IntechOpenThe usages of the past, and of antiquity, were felt throughout history, reflecting the fabric of apologetic and ideological narratives. Antiquity is studied to understand time to understand the way in which the past is received, integrated, and used. This work gathers seven essays featuring case studies on ancient cultural identity via interdisciplinary approaches. Interdisciplinarity, thanks to the intersection of history, archaeology, and linguistics, corresponds to the transversal, comprehensive, and complex look essential to understand the intrinsic value of antiquity in each time and in each present. Ancient history and archaeology demonstrate how diverse the ancient world truly was. Socio-cultural change and dynamics in contact situations between groups of distinct cultures produced constant innovations and adaptations. Are plants trying to tell us something? If so, it’s likely through Tarun Nayar, a biologist-turned musician who connects cables from his custom-built modular synthesizers to mushrooms, fruits, leaves etc., and transforms their bioelectric signals into captivating sounds. Atlas Obscura has the story and a link to the tunes:

The Atlantic recently published a feature about the loneliness epidemic that many Americans have fallen victim to — by our own doing in many cases. But what if there was a way back in to a healthier social life, one where the phone takes a back seat to meaningful friendships and experiences? There may be, Blair Braverman writes, in “Can Outdoor Friendships Solve the Loneliness Epidemic?” for @outside:

It wasn’t just terror: The Nazis won the cultural battle in a year.

For the National Socialists, everything was political.

All forms of culture — from theatre and cinema to painting and literature — were turned into instruments of propaganda and antisemitism.

The wombat outcry :
An (illegal) selfie with wildlife
vs systematic wildlife destruction and wilful neglect

"The irony of our country’s leaders condemning the actions of a young tourist’s treatment of a wombat while shamelessly sanctioning their slaughter is impossible to overlook...Kangaroos, native birds, possums, black swans and emus are just a few of the many native animals that landholders are granted licences to kill under the ATCW list."

"Our leaders have a lot to answer for and must confront the uncomfortable truth of their own involvement in wildlife destruction. They can no longer ignore the role they play in enabling the harm of native animals while lecturing others on respect for wildlife."

To me, huge vehicles like this convey the message: ‘I’ve got what I need, everyone else can get forked’. Unsurprising that driving high status cars is associated with disregard for rules that might inconvenience the driver while protecting the safety of others. Speed limits are so annoying. It’s as if some of us live in the narrative frameworks employed in adventure movies: main character (me, very important); supporting cast (them, nameless, expendable). It’s toxic.

How can we turn our cultural expectations around so behaving in ways that promote the wellbeing of everyone, & the land, air & waters that sustain us, is what confers status & earns respect?

A Canadian artist has canceled his show, "Since 1957," which was due to open on May 2 in New York, over President Trump's annexation threats. "The United States is no longer a country that Canadians can trust, and I feel it would be unpleasant and wrong to mount a show in the U.S. at this time," Toronto-based Alan Belcher wrote on Facebook. Now, @ArtNews is wondering, is a cultural boycott brewing? This follows Canadian author Louise Penny's cancelation of the U.S. leg of her book tour.
