It is time for the #winter2023anime season, so this will be the first post in the thread.
I will be giving quick thoughts on the first episode, then speaking about it further on the Otaku in Review #podcast being recorded at the end of the month.
So keep an eye on this thread for updates.
Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World (Episode 1):
It's all setup for why they don't trust others. It was nothing amazing, and characters seem alright. There is potential here and I'll give it another episode or 2 to see if its worth watching to its completion.
The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess (Episode 1):
That was great. I love me some Anisphia already. Her brother is a diiiiiiiiiiiiick. A yuri isekai with a really funny first episode, yet still had some good drama.
I can't wait for episode 2!
Tomo-chan is a Girl! (Episode 1):
This show feels like it should be way funnier than it is. I felt like every "punch" line just had me sitting here wishing I was laughing. I laughed all of twice this 1st episode.
It's not even that its bad, and I like the characters. It also looks pretty good. I just don't feel anything watching it. Maybe I give it one more episode, but its definitely on the fence.
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague (Episode 1):
Opening song is on point! Such a chill song.
This show is so cute. Komori is best girl already. Like the opening song, the show is just chill AF. So cute and fun.
I can get behind this so much. Also ending theme is fantastic also!
ONIMAI: I'm Now Your Sister! (Episode 1):
This show looks great in terms of character design, animation, color palette.
Its a little (a lot) odd with the premise, but has a good amount of genuinely funny moments.
I had a lot of fun with this 1st episode, definitely more than I expected
Spy Classroom (Episode 1):
This first episode can only be described as underwhelming. Thought it would be more exciting, and It got a bit better at the end, but not by much.
Unsure if I will watch episode 2, so maybe I'll just check out the light novel one day instead.
The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World (Episode 1):
OMG This show looks like trash. Character designs are meh, the animation looks slow or disjointed.
7 minutes in and I dropped it. I spent most of those 7 minutes laughing my ass off at how bad it was. But then I decided if I had to look at one more face stuck in the same look for more than 30 seconds, I might go insane
Farming Life in Another World (Episode 1):
Weird to start so far in the story for the opening instead of doing the setup first. Kind of goes against the manga, but I guess they were trying to be different than most isekai shows... But the setup is right after the opening credits.
The manga is a series I enjoy regardless of it being utterly average, and the show is about the same. Might not watch weekly, but will finish.
Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte (Episode 1):
I read the light novels and they were a lot fun. This first episode proves the anime is going to be just as fun!
The animation at times is not great, but the first episode captures the story and characters so well, its easy to give it a pass. I laughed so hard at times lol.
Buddy Daddies (Episode 1):
It looks great, but I'm not sold on it yet. There's something about the first episode that's not clicking. I'll have to give it a second episode to see if it clicks or not. So far I felt rushed as a viewer without enough explanation to anything.
The ending them is also super annoying with the autotune.
Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army (Episode 1):
WTF. The opening possibly spoils so much about what to expect about the MC and the antagonists.
Feels like this show could be another slice of life show that eventually turns to action... Which I'm not a fan of tbh.
Also MC is like "Boobs! Decision made! Cuz boobs!". But its not even good ecchi comedy.
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement (Episode 1):
A serviceable first episode. I like how Mitsuha debates on whether she should even go back to the other world for her own safety.
The moments of her brother flashbacks/thoughts are funny. Overall tho, not sure this show will be one I watch weekly. I'll give it another episode to decide.
The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World (Episode 1):
It's not amazing, but I found this first episode rather enjoyable. More interesting than I expected, and the animation quality is good.
I'll definitely give this a 2nd episode.
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten (Episode 1):
This is cute, relaxing. I like how the humor is more subtle and not trying to be just another slapstick rom-com.
I think I'll thoroughly enjoy this show this season.
Handyman Saitou in another world (Episode 1):
I liked this a lot. It didn't try to be more than it should be. While he was out with a party adventuring, it felt more slice of life than anything else. I also really liked the chracters.
I'm down for more of this one.
The Tale of the Outcasts (Episode 1):
Didn't really know what to expect out of this show, and it was good. The only thing is the first episode was super predictable, even to the final second.
Still I want to give it one more episode to determine if I keep up with this one weekly or binge later.
Ayakashi Triangle (Episode 1):
Ecchi gender-bender comedy. First episode was setup, with a bit of ecchi at the end. Super censored, but uncensored version airs a day later from what I read.
Didn't find this funny this 1st episode, but maybe it will be next one.
Mononogatari (Episode 1):
I already hate this. The MC is an annoying bigoted turd. The best description I can give of him. I don't even want to watch his redemption in to better understanding lol
Not continuing this one.
Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire (Episode 1):
I really enjoy the light novels, and this first episode did a good job with the adaptation outside of I wish it looked better. It's definitely keeping pace with the humor from the books.
I do look forward to how the battle junkie in Chris is dealt with. It can be a bit much at times in the LNs as they go on. Overall though, I have high hopes for this one.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (Episode 1):
The light novel series is a favorite, even if it does get repetitive. This first episode looks great, seems like they'll be doing a fun adaptation.
They made the food look good like it should. The way they end the first episode made me LOL. They nailed the humor from the books too.
Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible (Episode 1):
Why does Kubo's blush happen in horizontal lines? They look like scratches on her face. o_O
Oh lord, other girls suffer from the same scratch marks. It's really bugging me and I can't unsee it lol.
Overall though, it's cute, but with Nagatoro season 2 out, I'll skip this and binge later.
As of right now, Kubo is the last new show I'll be checking out. I'll now be deciding which ones I'll give a second episode 2 and watch weekly.
For further thoughts on series, I will post the Otaku in Review episode where we discuss the new shows after we record it and it goes live.
This will probably early February to allow us to watch 2 or 3 of some shows.
@gnitro this show looks so good! I was surprised, and half expecting a guilty pleasure isekai trash, but instead we get an interesting MC, great production quality and the episode flew by!
@To I understand, as I do too... But there are too many shows this season to check out... So I tossed this aside after laughing for about 5 minutes straight
@gnitro I stopped reading twenty seven works into the title
@ScottSpaziani Good thing there are only 10 words!
@gnitro Maybe I’ll give this one a chance then.
@TrevorIsland It's a lot of fun. It did a good job of adapting the light novels in the first episode so far.
@gnitro I'm on the fence about giving this a try, but most reviews point out that the main dude is super-bigoted, so that is making me very reluctant. Characters that start as bigots or misogynists have historically never won me over with their redemption arc, so I'm pretty sure that will be the case here. I suppose I shouldn't bother wasting my time then.
@TrevorIsland Yeah he's really bad too. One of those who act like its all okay because if he doesnt act with violence to all, then one may be dangerous.. Sounds like a racist cop who always fears for his life. I hated it
@gnitro I'm on board for this one so far. Watched EP1 today and had a great time. I've been reading they did brand partnerships so the packaging on items is legit!
@biscuit As long as they keep adapting the light novels and manga as well as episode 1 did, its going to be a fun ride. I'm definitely planning on keeping up with this one weekly.
That's also really cool they did partnerships. its cooler than seeing goofy similar names.
@gnitro I read the manga for a while before dropping it. It wasn't bad per say, it did try a little too hard, though.
