Friendly reminder: On mastodon/etc, Likes (aka Favorites) aren't what they are on other social networks. Around here:

Boost = "I like this, and think others might like it too!"
Favorite = "I like this, but that's between me and OP"

Without an "algorithm" choosing what to show you, we rely on our neighbors and follows to boost cool stuff.

@neatchee And that's how it should work.

@stefanburger @neatchee right? otherwise what's the point of boosting at all lol

Public

@neatchee In many cases I do both.

Quiet public

@neatchee the fave button gives dopamine to op :bugcat_nod:

Public

@neatchee Most people I interact with treat the favorite button as a reading receipt :)

Public

@neatchee I was aware that favorite is different that boost (as it was on Twitter in early days), but I was not aware that favorites are not even listed on the profile. I thought that is the difference between favorites and bookmarks. Thanks for the clarification.

@neatchee I try not to boost without also adding a comment or my own take on it. I love the “hide boosts” feature you can enable for each user you follow. It allows me to focus on what people are saying, especially those who are serial boosters. While some stuff is useful, I find a small number of users fill my timeline simply with boosts and not their own thoughts. I’m glad I don’t have to mute them completely because when they do post, they have thoughtful things to say.

Public

@neatchee they must rename that to “Bookmark”

Quiet public

@burak we already have a "bookmark" for saving posts

Quiet public

@neatchee yeah, but redundant.

Public

@neatchee thanks! Needed that info!

Public

@neatchee Boosts (local and remotely visible) and Faves (local, e.g. from other people on your server) both contribute to the position of the post in the Explore feed

@neatchee
Follows who never engage with you = "Please please please like my stuff"

@neatchee
Honestly, I never made the mental shift when Twitter started using likes to boost things. It's weird to me that people would think that likes = sharing at all.

I do often just like a post (tho it seems more often I will like and boost) - because "omg y'all have to see this" is a different emotion from "that made me happy".

I don't resent likes at all, even if I enjoy seeing people share my work more. It still is an indication I'm not posting into the void and people appreciate my posts, it has its role.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure likes increase the visibility of a post when it's viewed from a Lemmy, since there they are upvotes, and are sorted by that the same way upvotes work on Reddit.

All depends on how the server you're on presents the posts in your TL.
