We've had a ton of new users in the past week+, so I'm gonna break tradition and do one of these a bit early:
1) Your instance is probably run by someone as a hobby. Be kind. Be helpful. Contribute if you can.
2) Always use alt text on images. I know, it takes time. But it's one of the things we do here to support vision-impaired users, because they deserve to browse funny cat pics too
3) Use content warnings, and not just for "offensive" content. If your post could generate strong emotions (heavy politics, common PTSD triggers, tragedy, etc) let people keep it hidden for their own mental health
@neatchee What are alt text on images?
@Tamlyn when you attach an image to a post, there is an "edit" button that lets you add a text description of what's in the image. This helps blind and visually impaired users who use screen-readers to browse the internet
@neatchee You forgot one
4. Remember to be excellent to each other
@FlyboyM I ran out of characters hahaha
@neatchee if people need tips for how to write alt-text, I've found this guide to be good in terms of guidelines: https://wcag.com/blog/good-alt-text-bad-alt-text-making-your-content-perceivable/
@neatchee also worth noting that content warning can also be used for spoilers, or just as a way to collapse long posts.
They're surprisingly versatile.
