what is the worst adaptation of something you like/care about? (any adaptation from one medium to another counts, so it can be video game to anime, comic to movie, movie to video game, board games, books, myths, poems, theatre, etc, anything counts as long as it went from one medium to another)

bonus points for explaining why it was a bad adaptation

Follow-up from yesterday: what is an interesting/creative adaptation of something you like/care about? (any adaptation from one medium to another counts, so it can be video game to anime, comic to movie, movie to video game, board games, books, myths, poems, theatre, etc, anything counts as long as it went from one medium to another)

It doesn't have to be good or bad or even accurate, just creative or interesting in a way you want to talk about!

bonus points for explaining why it's interesting to you or why you think it's creative

@ami_angelwings I'm in the minority here but I think the movie adaptation from the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was solid! The book parts by stephen fry are really well done, the design of Marvin was brilliant and the tacked-on love story part was fitting for a well rounded movie (and it was important to Douglas Adams that every adaptation is as non-canonical as possible).

@EisT @ami_angelwings in the same sense that Brazil is Monty Python's "1984", the hhgtg movie was "Jim Henson's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". I think if you intentionally think of it as a Muppet Movie version your expectations shift in a way that makes it easier to realize it is actually very enjoyable

@ami_angelwings come to think of it, both Martin Freeman and Zoey Deschanel played their roles so well that they only kept being typecast into these roles. Martin being lost and confused (watson, bilbo) and Zoey being quirky (New Girl)

@ami_angelwings the Bakshi rotoscoped cartoon adaptation of Lord of the Rings. I saw about a minute of it as a kid and it stood etched in my mind for years. I finally bought the book on a whim because I remembered those scenes. Those really eerie orcs.

@ami_angelwings
I'm a hardcore theatre nerd, and most shows don't translate directly into film. Stage conventions need to be adapted to fit a movie format.

I was super impressed with Chicago. They implied that the musical numbers were part of the lead's imagination and obsession with being a performer.
It was a clever way to heighten the spectacle and go all out with the musical numbers while maintaining realism in the story.

@ami_angelwings I find it interesting how multiple parallel adaptations can bounce ideas around. Of late, many Japanese media start with a light novel series, then get adapted into manga and anime, all continuing to be published at once and they bounce ideas around between them. "Flight gear" in Youjo Senki for instance originated in the anime and worked its way into the manga which has taken it in new and interesting directions.

@ami_angelwings I probably forget a lot, but Last of us is an example. They were able to bring over a game to a TV series and even insert a pretty original episode that even won awards.

@ami_angelwings Blasphemous is one of my favorite adaptations of religious beliefs and it's affect on a world. And Elden Rings take on how rot runs deep into an defeated society and twists who's left.

@ami_angelwings the Harry Potter books converted to movies are outstanding.
