1960: the people of 2024 will have flying cars, 2 day work weeks, and be colonizing space

2024: "why is everybody mad at me today" i wonder as i stare at the notifications on my pocket depression rectangle

1990: the people of 2024 will be more productive than ever because computers will make everything easier

2024: me staring at my screen clicking for hours "what counts as a motorcycle? does the person riding the bicycle count as part of the bicycle? does the walk signal count as a traffic light? is this small white edge part of the crosswalk!? why won't you LET ME JUST BUY THE GODDAMN MADOKA PLUSHY YOU ARE THE ONLY STORE THAT ISN'T GEOLOCKED FROM SENDING TO MY COUNTRY"

@ami_angelwings We've been so much lied to.

Or just people in the past were much more optimistic and couldn't imagine we had one of the worst timeline.

Public

@ami_angelwings Yea but the nuclear reactors proved to be so heavy, we had to keep them to the ground or submarine.

"pocket depression rectangle" may be the perfect description... <golf clap>

Public

@ami_angelwings In 1964, Isaac Asimov predicted the world fifty years later would be (more) luxurious, fully-automated, and conspicuously nuclear-powered, with household robots taking care of everything for us and self-driving robot cars capable of making short flights.

Public

@ami_angelwings And, perhaps, he was right on the money with a few things, but none more than most people being interminably bored with their lives as the only worthwhile pursuits are taken up by a precious few people. It’s just that those pursuits were imagined to be creative work.

Public

@ami_angelwings I will now refer to my cell phone as a "pdr", a "pocket depression rectangle"

Public

@modgamers Yes, but I am over 60.

Public

@ColinTheMathmo @ami_angelwings Where you already over 60 in 2013, when the tweet was published?

Public

@modgamers Good point ... no.

But I was reading fact and fiction in the early 60s, and it was promising flying cars.

So maybe I'm justified anyway.

@ColinTheMathmo @modgamers @ami_angelwings i'm still well under 60 even now but most of the "future" i was promised was in old library books

i had a special interest in robots as a kid and we were promised fully automated UBI :marseyplaydead:
Public

@modgamers @ami_angelwings agreed with the sentiment but "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" was published in the 60's

the cyberpunk dystopia we were promised was run by japan/(insert east asian culture), & we'd all be doing cool anime shit, but instead we got orwell & truman show

@asbestos_chan @ami_angelwings @modgamers I'd rather have no dystopia at all, thank you very much -- but I guess not having the Japanese kind at least means I don't have to deal with tentacled bio-cyber monsters. Imagine it _that_ was what Zuck was into rather than Neal Stephenson!

@modgamers
I was promised a socialist utopia with starships, replicators, holodecks, and transporters. Where's my socialist utopia with all that? 🥲😭 Guess we'll have to make it. 🚀
@ami_angelwings @soatok

Quiet public

@j @modgamers @soatok well that all happened after WW3 so we might still be on track, just won't be us enjoying it x_x

Quiet public

@j @modgamers @ami_angelwings @soatok Star Trek wasn't socialist (as DS9 made clear). There wasn't any commerce on Startfleet ships because Starfleet was the Federation's military.

Quiet public

You know, that situation is far more complex than you make it out to be - and yes, the federation and united earth is fundamentally socialist in construction. Socialism doesn't mean no money or trade - especially when interacting in a place that was essentially Casablanca in space. The world of star trek is progressive but it's written by people living under capitalist realism. Just as 60's sexism crept in so did that. Context impacts on fiction. @andytiedye @modgamers @ami_angelwings @soatok

"Pocket depression rectangle"

Lol

Very apt name.

Public

@ami_angelwings I'm of the opinion that people blaming smartphones or social media are shooting the messenger. I realized our society was terrible twenty years before those were even a *thing*; people just thought I was crazy then.

Quiet public

@ami_angelwings

Praising you for the phrase pocket depression rectangle...from my pocket depression rectangle.

Public

@ami_angelwings "pocket depression rectangle" is harsh and beautiful

Public

@ami_angelwings@urusai.social I get what you’re trying to say but at the same time we are much more productive than ever due to technology, but the expected output of us continues to grow past the point of reason. You’re expected to do what would have taken weeks to do by hand 40 years ago in about an hour.

Public

@ami_angelwings@urusai.social not only that, but due to instant communication you end up getting asked multiple times in a row if you’re done yet, which can add to stress making you rush through things making more work for yourself in the end. The state of micromanagement because we have software that exports your employee’s productivity metrics into a centralized system so you can fire the least productive employee at the tip of your fingertips? We’ve gotten to the point that you’re expected to do inhuman amounts of work with a computer algorithm breathing down your neck ready to fire you for the slightest decrease. It’s no fucking wonder right like, I hate this. I genuinely hate this I work in IT, I am a tech person and even I say I think some shit should stay far far away. IM such as slack and ms teams should never have been a thing, the fact that you’re expected to drop everything to respond to your boss nearly instantly? If you’re entering values in excel and you’re like me that single distraction can make you lose your place and you’ll spend at least 5 minutes trying to get back.

Public

@puppygirlhornypost2 @ami_angelwings Also, more productivity never turned into better wages, despite being an advertised feature. All that extra money went to the bag of stupid already millionaire assholes with hoarder tendencies.

Public

@ami_angelwings This is me, often. 😐

Quiet public

@ami_angelwings they got it all wrong. the people of 2024 will be more depressed than ever because computers do all the work (badly) but everyone is still expected to work 40 hours per week plus unpaid overtime that is implicitly required even though there isn't enough work for everyone

Public

@ami_angelwings @MLE_online I’ve never once asked these questions and just assumed it was the option that meant selecting the least number of squares possible which always seems to work fine.

What always makes me laugh is when it clearly wanted me to label a bicycle as a motorcycle. 🚲🏍️ :neocat_thinking:
